
Austin Great Wall Chinese School (AGWCS) is a non-profit organization registered with city government. The school was established in 1994. Since then, it has been serving the community by teaching Chinese language, art, and culture. It has also been involving in a lot other community activities. Started with only 60 students in 1994, AGWCS has grown fast. Currently, it has over 400 students enrolled, being the largest Chinese language school in Austin areas.
AGWCS keeps the same school calendar as Austin Independent School District, two semesters within each school year, and average 15 school days in each semester. The school meets from 2:00pm to 5:50pm on Sundays. The first two hours are devoted to Chinese language learning for the students with Chinese background. From 4:00 to 4:50, the school offers other classes like Math, Art, Music, Dance, Kunfu, Taiji, Chess, Badminton and Chinese calligraphy… Bilingual classes are offered to children and adults without Chinese background who descent to learn Chinese as their second language from 4:00 to 5:50pm.
AGWCS has been operated by parent volunteers. Its financial support is mainly from tuition. The students need to get them registered each semester online via www.agwcs.org after creating a student account. The registration for this coming fall will start from August 1, 2010.
